To see an educator under Your Mentees, they need to select you as their mentor in Grow. Joining your centre team does not create that relationship. Follow the missing-mentee steps below to check the assignment.
Who this guide is for
This guide is for mentors who have been assigned to support one or more educators through their Grow journeys. As a mentor in Grow, you're the person who supports mentees through their professional development Journeys. This guide covers everything you need from finding your mentees to recording meeting notes and helping them reach their goals.
If you're also completing your own Grow journey, see: Guide to starting and completing your Grow journey
Step 1: Set up your profile
Before you can access your mentees, you'll need to complete your own Grow profile setup. This only takes a few minutes.
1. Log in to Mana at app.makemana.com and click the Grow icon in the left navigation bar.
2. You'll be prompted to set up your profile. Click Set Up Profile to begin.
3. About You: Write a short bio about your background and what brought you into early childhood education.
4. Select Your Role: Choose the role that best fits your position. This helps Grow tailor suggestions and standards to your context.
5. Add Your Mentor: Mentors can also have their own mentor. If someone supports your professional development, add them here. Skip if not relevant.
6. Requirements Briefing: Read through your organisation's professional growth expectations, tick the box, and press Complete Setup.
7. You can edit or update your profile at any time by selecting Teacher settings from your Grow dashboard.
Step 2: Find a missing mentee
An accepted centre-team invitation does not make someone your mentee. The educator needs to select you as their mentor in Grow.
Ask the educator to open their own Grow dashboard and complete any required profile setup.
In the Mentors card, select Manage.
Under Manage mentors, search for your name in Search mentors by name... and select the correct person. Keep any other mentors they still need.
Select Save mentors and wait for Mentors updated.
Return to your own Grow dashboard and refresh it. Look under Your Mentees, then select the educator’s profile icon.
1 Search for the correct mentor. 2 Review your selection and save. Names are hidden for privacy.
Search only shows mentors available in the educator’s organisations. A person with an unaccepted invitation cannot be selected yet.
If the mentor cannot be found, or the saved relationship still does not appear, contact Help & Support with the educator, mentor and organisation names and what each person sees. Avoid sending another centre-team invitation just to create the mentor relationship.
Step 3: Access your mentee's Grow profile
Click on a mentee's profile icon to open their Grow profile. From here you can access everything relevant to their professional development:
Progress report: an overview of where your mentee is across their whole Grow cycle
Journeys: their professional development goals, steps, and evidence
Standards: their practice mapped against professional teaching standards
Learning: their professional development records and uploaded resources
Mentoring: your one-on-one sessions and meeting notes
Observe: your formal observations of the mentee in practice
Step 4: Support a mentee to complete their Journey
Journeys generally move through three phases (according to set up): an opening phase where goals and steps are set, a middle phase where most of the work and evidence-gathering happens, and a completion phase where the educator reflects and wraps up.
Your role throughout is to check in regularly, respond to evidence, and help the educator reflect on what they've learned and achieved.
How to record one-on-one meeting notes
Grow Meetings bring preparation, the conversation record and agreed follow-ups together. In the standard web interface, Add one-on-one is available in the educator’s own Mentoring view when an active Grow mentor is assigned.
Prepare gives the educator a place to note useful context before the conversation. A separate preparation document is optional. Meet holds the conversation record, and Follow Up helps carry agreed next steps forward.
Read About Grow Meetings to understand how the stages fit together. The preparation and follow-up guides linked from that introduction cover educators working on their own meetings in Mana on the web.
How to note an observation of a mentee in practice
If your mentoring involves observing an educator in practice, capture that observation in the Observe section of Grow:
1. Open the mentee's Grow profile and tap the Observe section.
2. Schedule an observation.
3. Open the practice observation.
4. Capture with Coach Sue or capture your observations manually with a document such as a Teacher Reflection.
5. Mark the requirement Complete when finalised. It is linked to the educator's Grow profile and visible to them.
How to support completion of a Journey
When a mentee is ready to complete their Journey, you can review this together in-person and confirm their completion by letting them know they can mark their Journey on Mana as Complete.
Common FAQs:
Where do I add context before a mentoring meeting?
Prepare is the stage for context to bring to a Grow Meeting. A separate preparation document is optional. Read About Grow Meetings to understand how preparation, meeting notes and follow-ups fit together. The task guides linked from that introduction cover educators working on their own meetings in Mana on the web.Do I receive a notification when added as a mentor?
Not at this stage, but once you've been assigned as a mentor you'll see your mentee's profile icon appear in your Grow dashboard under Mentees.
