Write a learning story to beautifully document what you observed about a child, what it means for their development, strengths and interests, and what to do next to extend their learning and development.

Step-by-step guide:

  1. Select the Journeys tab.

  2. Choose the child you want to work with.

  3. Click Continue Journey.

  4. If you are not already in the guided view, switch to it using the button in the top right corner.

  5. If the Coach Sue options have not yet been generated, select Regenerate now.

  6. Review the suggested options.

    • If one suggests Observe and you’d like to proceed, pin it. Then follow the guidance to observe in the room. Once your observations are complete, return to Planning to create the learning story from those observations.

    • If you already have observations, select Start. If the document type is set to Jotting, change it to Learning story.

    • Alternatively, you can Choose your own and select Learning story directly.

  7. Make sure your writing mode is set to Write with Mana.

  8. Enter your notes using:

  • Text box: type in all your thoughts and notes on observe, assess and where to go

  • Write with Sue: start chatting with Coach Sue from the start to build your learning story (she will prompt you to provide details about the observations, assessment and extension)

  • Record voice: hit record and speak naturally about the observation, learning and next steps (names and quotes will be picked up too!)

9. Select Generate

10. Depending on the amount of information provided the document will either be generated or you'll be prompted by Coach Sue to give more detail.

  • If more detail required, chat until progress bar reaches 100% at which point you it will turn into a green Generate icon.

11. Read, review, edit and approve your document while in Edit Mode

  • Edit the document content/title directly

  • Use the Magic Edit bar ("What should I change?") to make instant text changes (e.g., change tone, include different outcomes, add other details)

  • Translate your document into any available language with Translate (original in English will appear below the translation)

  • Use Fix Grammar & Spelling if you wrote in additional information directly

  • Upload media (images, videos, PDFs)

12. Select Save to enter Viewing Mode

  • Use the panel on the right to scroll through:

    • Info: your original text & observed, created, and last modified dates

    • Coach Sue: review and continue your conversation with Sue (only for coaching purposes- she can no longer edit)

    • Follow Ups: to view location of the document and choose next steps

Tip: Click History (clock icon on the top right) to restore previous versions at any time as you edit your document.

13. Share your learning story with families so they can see their child’s day come to life.

  • Hit Share to share this document with families (only if Families is enabled on Mana)

  • Copy your final story using the copy button to share on another platform

  • Download/print to share a soft/hard copy of the learning story

14. Go back to the child's Journey and check for next steps suggested by Coach Sue

Your turn!
